NBN - National Biodiversity Network Building
knowledge by sharing information
National Biodiversity Network A group of six organisations concerned with the natural environment have formed a consortium to bring together several independent initiatives relating to managing biodiversity information. Together they have developed a co-ordinated programme of work to establish an agreed approach to biological recording at alllevels, applicable throughout the UK, and deliver a greater collective gain than would be permissible by individual action. The National Biodiversity Network is an initiative to improve accessibility of relevant wildlife information to anyone who needs or wants it. The NBN's mission is to improve the care of the UK's natural heritage by providing people with the information they need to make wise choices as to how they use and interact with their natural heritage. The NBN's aim is that by the year 2010 there will be a network of local and national data custodians across the UK, each making use of information technology to manage linked databases of wildlife information. The NBN is driven by a conservation/biodiversity need. Accurate biological records (including information about habitats) are essential for making informed decisions on a wide range of issues, most notably in connection with land use and the impact of human activities. In addition, the collection and use of biological records continues to provide enjoyment and education for people of all ages, geographical and social backgrounds. Local Record Centres As a fundamental part of the NBN, Local Record Centres (LRCs) are envisaged as co-ordinators and managers of biodiversity information relating to a particular area. Acting as a local focus for biological recording they will link users with data collectors and integrate work with other LRCs and national data holders to improve the accessibility or relevant wildlife information. The Linking LRCs project, being led by the Wildlife Trusts on behalf of the NBN consortium, aims to develop and test a "new" model for LRCs which local consortia can use to meet their biodiversity information needs as part of the NBN. North East Scotland was selected as a pilot for this approach because it had no existing LRC but the need for work in this area was clearly identified during the Local Biodiversity Action Plan (LBAP) audit process and endorsed by the LBAP Steering Group. The Linking LRCs project brings together a wide range of existing experience and new thinking which forms an exciting basis for developing proposals for a LRC in North East Scotland. Biodiversity
is the variety of life, the rich assembly of living things in the natural
world.
Biodiversity includes all living things and their environments, from the tiniest flying insect to the tallest tree, from open expanses of coastline to the smallest urban garden. Biodiversity is found everywhere. We are part if biodiversity and depend on it for our quality of life. Biodiversity involves everyone, it supports us, it is our vital for our survival.
